A Century of Community: The Rich History of Legacy Village at Plantation Manor

Nestled in Thomasville, Georgia, the property at 220 Park Avenue has long stood as a pillar of local heritage, warmth, and hospitality. From its beginnings as a distinguished family residence to its current chapter as a senior living community, the story of 220 Park Avenue spans nearly a century of serving the Thomasville community.
1926–1936: The Mitchell Family & A New English-Style Town Home
The journey of 220 Park Avenue began in September 1926, when Joseph Mitchell Sr.—son of prominent Thomasville hotel owner Thomas Cole Mitchell—purchased a lot on the 200 block of Park Avenue. Along with his wife, Gertrude Gregory Mitchell, and their five children (Earl, Joseph Jr., Frances Sophronia, Elizabeth, and John), construction began on a handsome two-story tile-and-brick home designed in the English style.
Under the direction of builder J. T. Milligan, the eight-room residence progressed rapidly. Local news celebrated Park Avenue as one of the town's true showplaces, praising the new home as one of Thomasville's most attractive additions. By February 1927, Mr. Mitchell and his family officially moved into their newly completed home.
1936–1988: Generations of Local Families
In 1936, Dr. Charley Kendrick Wall and his wife, Leonce Marie Fremeaux Wall took ownership of the house, along with their daughters, Leonce and Madeleine.
Two decades later, in 1958, the house was purchased by Roland Franklin McDonald Smith—a respected business figure involved with the Toscoga Seed Company and Thomas County Federal Savings and Loan. Together with his wife, Alma Matilda Sanders Smith, and their children, Franklin Maxwell and Mary McDonald, the Smith family called 220 Park Avenue home for thirty years.
In 1988, ownership transitioned to Dalphene Gloria Warren Dale Harrell, marking the end of the property’s single-family residential era.
1996–Present: A Legacy of Senior Living & Care
A major transformation occurred in 1996 when the property was sold to Continental Health Properties, opening its doors as Plantation Manor Retirement Center.
In 2014, Legacy Senior Living took over management of the community, introducing Legacy Village at Plantation Manor. By 2023, Legacy Senior Living officially assumed ownership of the property, while continuing to maintain management of the community.
Today, 220 Park Avenue continues to honor its storied heritage. What began in 1926 as a cherished family home has evolved into a welcoming community where seniors experience compassionate care, dignity, and a true sense of belonging in the heart of Thomasville.
