Resident Spotlight

Andrew Poulos was born in April 1936 in Korischades, Greece where he lived with his six sisters and parents. When his father tragically died in Greece’s civil war, Andrew felt the responsibility to provide for his family even though still a teenager. As Greece was suffering economically from both WWII and the civil war, he decided to move to Thomasville, Georgia where he already had relatives to find work.

Andrew’s cousins owned a restaurant called The Plaza, and he started work as a pot washer and occasionally a server. He eventually began training as a chef, and by 1958, when he was just 22 years old, Andrew was made an official partner of The Plaza with his cousins. With the money he earned, Andrew was able to send dowry money to his six sisters so that they could all have their own homes.

In 2007, The Plaza was sold, but Andrew continued to work there full-time as a chef. When COVID hit, he stepped down to a part-time position doing prep work and baking desserts. This upcoming September, Andrew will have been working at The Plaza for 70 years!

In 1964, Andrew returned to Greece to marry his wife, Angie. After their wedding, Andrew brought Angie back to Thomasville where they had two sons together. A close-knit family, Andrew and Angie were blessed with one grandson. The Pouloses were married for 60 years before Angie’s passing earlier this year, upon which he moved into Legacy Village of Plantation Manor and is a beloved resident.
